In this presentation, given in June 2024 at Exeter University, I explore why the concept of “integration” is not traditionally present in Indigenous contexts. Integration, as understood in modern terms, refers to the period following a psychedelic experience and the practices used to incorporate its insights into daily life. This concept has become increasingly significant in contemporary settings.

By examining the traditional uses of ayahuasca among the Yawanawá and Huni Kuin, I will highlight the lessons these Indigenous practices can offer for modern psychedelic use. I will delve into their understanding of “família” (family) and emphasize the importance of “community”—not only among humans but also including other-than-human communities in the integration process. The presentation concludes with recommendations on harmonizing traditional and modern approaches to integration.
