Deforestation and degradation account for nearly one fifth of all global anthropogenic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and represent the most significant proportion of total emissions from many developing countries. The growing global concern about the impact of climate change has led to an international dialog around the creation of a sound mechanism to slow deforestation and degradation. This mechanism, referred to as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+), includes the provision of sustainable forest management, the enhancement of carbon stocks and the generation of co-benefits for forest stakeholders.
